Memories Are Made of This

Jerry Blavat dances into the future

GOOD GAWD!" IT must be the mid '60s with hundreds of sweaty, pubescent "yon teenagers" gyrating, stomping and easily doing complicated line dances to the sounds of the oldies and Motown. It must be a record hop where street corner harmony groups sang a capella long before the term "doo wop" was coined. It must be a time warp where the Geator with the Heater reigns over Discophonic Scene, a television show that encompassed all of the above.

No, it's 40 years later at Memories in Margate and Jerry Blavat is still dancing, singing and encouraging his "yon teenagers" (now "beyond teenagers") to "Keep on rockin', 'cause you only rock once." Perched above the crowd in his DJ booth, he exhorts "My man, Pots and Pans" and other club regulars to dance, while he broadcasts live over local radio stations.

"We bought Memories in 1972," he reminisces. "Before I bought it, it was called the Elbow Room. In those days I had a live group called the Geator Men and we were working clubs." The Elbow Room booked the group in September of 1971 to entertain on Fridays and Saturdays through the off-season. Business improved tremendously in part due to the Geator's tremendous following as a disc jockey and the group's music. In addition to his signature "Discophonic Walk," Blavat sang oldies by the Four Tops and Hank Ballard. "It became so successful, I saw that all of a sudden if I'm doing business in the wintertime, imagine what would happen in the summertime."

However, according to Blavat, when the operators of the business disappeared (after bouncing a few checks), the owners offered to sell him the club. After working out a suitable deal, Blavat bought the Elbow Room and renamed it Memories.

"When I bought Memories, I knew the power of what I could have done because I had an idea in my mind if all of these people were loving the oldies back then, imagine if I would start to bring some of the oldies groups in -- which we did at the very beginning."

The first year was frantic with appearances by the Four Seasons, Chuck Berry, the Ronnettes, Jay and the Americans and others. Blavat was ahead of the curve, since the oldies resurgence had not yet surfaced. He was able to book most of those acts for close to scale. The top price was anywhere from $1,500 to $2,500. "I paid the Four Seasons $2,500," he says. "The highest priced act I ever booked there was Chuck Berry for $5,000."

Now, although the Geator relies on recorded music, he books Kenny Vance and the Planotones to open and close each summer season. "Kenny Vance is indicative of what my musical philosophy is," he says. "Kenny Vance represents music of the past, but performs it in such a way that it is acceptable to any audience. In other words, he is that good ... He represents what Memories is about in music, style and philosophy." Readers can see Vance (a former member of Jay and the Americans) in Eddie and the Cruisers, a rock 'n' roll mystery based in Somers Point during the early '60s.

The question arises as to why such a popular club is only open on weekends. Since first opening the club, Blavat's career (like the oldies music) has resurged and he is in demand to appear at other clubs and do several radio shows per week, in addition to writing a column for Atlantic City Weekly. "Since then, I'm on the radio five days a week (actually seven days a week on a network) and work clubs almost every night of the week during the winter," he comments. "Thank God I am so successful in doing these one-nighters, that I don't open up Memories ... if I weren't I would probably open up Memories more than just Friday and Saturday."

Obviously, people come to the club to see the Geator With the Heater perform, as much as to dance. It just wouldn't be the same with a substitute disc jockey.

Blavat, a South Philadelphia native who identifies himself as being from Saint Monica's Parish (17th and Ritner streets), understood the power of rock 'n' roll from his days as a dancer on Bandstand to his current role as performer/proprietor of Memories. "That's exactly what it was about," says an enthusiastic Blavat. "It was bringing people in to this nostalgic place, playing the oldies, having them dance and knowing that whether they were young or old, that they were having such a good time that they would recreate the memories of yesterday -- today. That's the secret of Memories."

Another secret is the broad range of people who patronize the club. "We have every imaginable age that comes in here," says Blavat. However, when Memories opened, its crowd was younger, since the drinking age was 18. It exposed the crowd to the music of an earlier time. Many of those young patrons are now leaders in the fields of business, the arts and politics.

"[NJ State Senator] Bill Gormley used to go to Memories in Margate and Bruce Springsteen, before he became a big star, would come to Memories in Margate during the wintertime." Blavat rattled off several more patrons' names including US Senator Arlen Spector, former Pa. Governor Mark Schweiker, Judge Bruce Kaufman, former Pa. State Senator Bob Rovner, attorney Bob Daniels, Admiral Jim Eastwood, Pa. State Senator Vince Fumo, Jilly Rizzo, and Sammy Davis Jr.

"In those days, I used to cook crabs and spaghetti. I would close the club and all these performers who were working in Atlantic City would come and hang with me after work, because Memories was open until four o'clock in the morning," he reflects.

"All ages come there and feel comfortable," adds Blavat. "It's probably the only club in America where you have a mix. The ages go from 24 to 75 years. It's amazing."

Memories' philosophy can best be summed up by a large placard, adorned with caricatures of Charlie Chaplin, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and Greta Garbo, originally placed on one of the club's walls. It stated, "Welcome to Memories. This club is dedicated to the artists and musicians of old, who made our lives a little more enjoyable. If, as you leave today, you have enjoyed the memories of yesterday, then you will come back again for memories of tomorrow."

Memories is located at Amherst & Madison avenues in Margate. It is open on Friday and Saturday from 9pm to 4am. Cover charge is $10. There is a complimentary food buffet on Friday night. Call 823-2196.
