Soak up the Sounds of Sheryl Crow

August 14

Sheryl Crow, the rocker whose smash hit "Soak up the Sun" made her a household name, performs at Trump Taj Mahal Saturday, Aug. 14 at 8pm. Tickets are $85, $60 and $40. Crow grew up in a household where her mother was a piano teacher and her father used to play trumpet in swing bands before he became a lawyer. She played piano throughout high school and went on to major in music at University of Missouri in Columbia. There, she performed in a rock band called Cashmere.

Upon graduation, Crow taught music to elementary students at first, but soon followed her desire for a rock and roll career by moving to Los Angeles. There, she took on odd jobs and sang in television commercials. Her big break came when she auditioned as a back-up singer for Michael Jackson's Bad tour. She completed that run, and another with Don Henley and his End of the Innocence tour.

During that time, she began to write songs that were picked up by such artists as Celine Dion and Wynonna Judd. After being invited to join a weekly jam session, she and a group of musicians released The Tuesday Night Music Club album. The songs, "Leaving Las Vegas" and "All I Wanna Do", emerged as hits and Sheryl Crow began to get the recognition she never received as a back-up singer. Touring with Bob Dylan and others, producing videos of her songs and appearing on late night television, Crow became well known.

Her self-titled, second album was a bit harder in tone. She emerged as a grunge fashion queen, but quickly resurrected that image with a more traditional look in her video for the hit song, "Everyday is a Winding Road." Her next album, The Globe Sessions, launched the hit single, "My Favorite Mistake."

Her newest release, C'mon, C'mon, establishes Crow as one of the most resilient female voices in rock and roll.
